This was my first AOS artwork purchase and my favourite. The technique used here of pencil on the pale green wash leaves the image fading in and out of reality; merging with the formless. His profile is like a cliff face; eternal, solid and ancient beyond words (or incarnations). I love the story of Spare walking in London and suddenly it came upon him that the whole street was thronging with fellow satyrs! Spare's genius in the very literal sense, was to conceptualise our ever-changing forms through his art.
The Austin Osman Spare prints from the Zos 2007 glasgow exhibition catalogue; available soon to buy in beautiful photographic quality and original artwork dimensions.
