Goddess of wisdom, Athena was the patron of Athens and recognised as one of the most benevolent goddesses. Known as one of the virgin goddesses unaffected by the spell of Aphrodite, she was strong, fair, independent and merciful. She often helped heroes such as Jason, Perseus and her half-brother Hercules when they encountered dangers.
Athena sprang fully formed in her golden battle armour from the forehead of Zeus to become his favourite child, he entrusted her with his magic shield and lightening bolts, and took the role of his protector and advisor. This statue is made of resin and is 306mm high and 140 wide at the base. She carries the Gorgon shield bearing the head of Medusa and is clad in armour featuring her totem, the owl.
